College Awareness Day at NMSFriday March 16, 2018
|
Dear NMS Parents/Guardians:
We are excited to let you know about our first College Awareness/March Madness event which will take place this Friday, March 16, 2018. As I am sure you are well aware, it is never too early to promote college awareness. In fact, studies show that college awareness should begin as early as 6th grade. With the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament beginning this Thursday, many students are naturally talking about colleges. All month, through Blazers Live, SCO students have been introducing collegiate vocabulary terms such as tuition, room and board, scholarship, GPA, transcript, mascot, Greek Life, ACT, SAT, public school, private school, in state, out of state etc. Using the vocabulary learned, students will be engaging in a school wide scavenger hunt this Friday. During this scavenger hunt, teachers and staff will be present in the hallways wearing spirit wear from the college or university he/she attended. Students will be approaching teachers and staff asking questions regarding their college experience(s). We hope you can encourage your child to wear college spirit wear this Friday, March 16. The goal is for our students to use language relating to college while gaining a collegiate awareness. When colleges found out what we have planned, they were incredibly supportive. In fact, we received over 1,000 give-aways from colleges including: Adelphi University Barnard College Borough of Manhattan Community College Boston University Buffalo State College Case Western Reserve Claremont McKenna College Colby-Sawyer College University of Colorado Dartmouth College Fashion Institute of Technology Florida State University Hamilton College Hofstra University Indiana University James Madison University LIM College (Laboratory Institute of Merchandising) Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences McDaniel College Merrimack College Muhlenberg College Nassau Community College New England University New Jersey Institute of Technology New York Institute of Technology New York University Niagara University Nichols College Queens College Rider University Schreyer Honors College at Pennsylvania State University St. Joseph's College SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry SUNY Plattsburgh Syracuse University Temple University The College of New Jersey Towson University Tufts University United States Merchant Marine Academy University of Alabama University of California Los Angeles University of Chicago University of Delaware University of Hartford University of Maryland University of South Florida University of Virginia University of Wisconsin Utica College Vanderbilt University Western New England College Each student will receive one of these generously donates prizes upon completion of the scavenger hunt. College Awareness will continue throughout the month as students will be invited to participate in an “HQ” style college awareness game during homeroom which will feature highlights of the basketball tournament. We hope you are as excited as we are about this event!
